Hi friends!
I don’t know about you, but I’m NOT a morning person. I’m more of a night owl and I usually head off to bed between around midnight – 1am.
Mind you, anyone that heads to bed at that time isn’t going to be a morning person, right? 😆
I just can’t seem to adjust my body clock and if I wake up any earlier in the day to try to change things, I still end up not being tired at the usual times ‘normal’ people go to bed!
This means that I definitely need a little perking up in the mornings. Sure, you could run out to snag a coffee from your local coffee shop, but if you’re anything like me, I can’t even begin to work on getting ready or heading out until I’ve at least woken up properly.
Let’s take today as an example. I had to get up early because we had workmen coming in to fix and replace floor boards in one of the bedrooms. I didn’t have anything to perk me up and wanted to stay close-by in case they needed me. That meant hanging around in my bedroom. So I lay in bed watching TV while the loud crashes and bangs occurred in the next room.
Before I even knew it, I was asleep (loud bangs n’ all!) I don’t even know how I managed that, but that’s what happens when you don’t get your coffee fix!
Since I’m a danger to myself and others’ around me in my zombie-like state in the mornings, this means getting a latte fix at home is the best course of action. Usually a regular ol’ instant coffee at home doesn’t even come close to the taste from a coffee shop.
That is until I decided to do something about that…
And this Coffee Shop Style Homemade Latte is about to change all that!
It’s a barista style latte complete with that delicious coffee taste and foamed milk without the need for any special coffee machines or a milk foamer (see the tips below in the recipe), and uses just 2-3 store-cupboard and inexpensive ingredients.
You’ll never need to pop out first thing in the morning for your latte fix again!
Yield: 1 extra large mug (or 2 standard mugs)
This barista style Homemade Instant Latte recipe can be made in minutes and looks and tastes like a coffee shop style latte.
Prep Time3 minutes
Ingredients
Foamed milk
- 20g (scant ¼ cup) milk powder
- 150ml (6 fl oz) hot (but not boiling) water
Coffee
- ½ tbsp good quality instant coffee
- 1-2 tsp sugar, optional
- 100ml (3.5 fl oz) boiling water or hot water
Instructions
- Boil the kettle ensuring you have at least 250ml (just over 1 cup) of water. If you have a kettle that allows you to adjust the temperature, set it to around 90-95°C (195-205°F), and measure out hot water into two small jugs, set aside.
- Add the milk powder to a large jug and slowly pour in 150ml (6 fl oz) hot water into the milk powder, stirring to ensure no lumps form. Using a milk foamer, foam the milk by adding the wand in the milk at around 30-40 degree angle, foaming the top before submerging as it starts foaming to get rid of any large air bubbles - this usually takes around 1-2 minutes (see the video if you're unsure). If you don't have a milk foamer, you can either use a hand or electric whisk, or add the milk powder and water into a large mason jar and shake constantly for 30-seconds to 1-minute.
- Pour the foamed milk into an extra large mug or equally between two standard mugs. You will have a little foam in the jug afterwards. Reserve the foam until later.
- In the jug with 100ml (3.5 fl oz) water, add the instant coffee and sugar (optional), and stir well to dissolve. Carefully pour the coffee mixture into the extra large mugor equally between two standard sized mugs.
- Immediately top with the reserved milk foam. You can also sprinkle some instant chocolate over the foamed milk at this point, if desired.
- Serve immediately.
Notes
Tips:
- Don't like milk powder or don't have any to hand? No problem, substitute the hot water on the foamed milk for regular milk and omit the milk powder. Also, if using regular milk, it's best to foam the milk whilst still cold from the fridge - it stabilises better when foamed before, for some reason. Just heat it in the microwave until hot for about 30-seconds 1-minute, depending on your microwaves powder.
- Don't have a milk foamer? You can either use a hand or electric whisk to foam, or add the milk powder and water into a large mason jar and shake constantly for 30-seconds to 1-minute.
