History of the Minnesota Lottery

The Minnesota Lottery has been in operation since 1989, as state voters approved its establishment by 57 percent in a constitutional amendment proposed in 1988. The first tickets went on sale on April 17th 1990 and by the end of the week the Minnesota Lottery had hit $15 million in sales. Powerball tickets became available to state residents in August of that same year, while Mega Millions tickets went on sale in Minnesota in January 2010.

MN Lottery revenue is allocated to the state's General Fund; about 24 cents of every $1 raised through lottery tickets is returned to the state in some form of aid. When Minnesotans play lottery games in the Land of 10,000 Lakes, they are directly helping educational initiatives, health services, public safety and local governments. Any remaining revenue is then distributed to the Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund, the Natural Resources Fund and the Game and Fish Fund. You can help preserve Minnesota's natural beauty just by buying a lottery ticket!

The All or Nothing lottery was cancelled in June 2017.
